Bonus Animations (Easter Holidays)
I’ll keep this post short and sweet: over the easter holidays, I made a few things to keep myself occupied and advance my portfolio ever so slightly. The first below is “A Call in the Night”, which is the final version of the storyboard which I made during Bianca’s workshop back in February. Complete with compositing and voiced by my two good friends Neale and Marco, I’m pretty pleased with how it turned out.
The next animation is another set of Lupin eyecatches, exploring a bit of compositing, a bit of background work inspired by Miyazaki’s wonderful Part 2 episode “Wings of Death – Albatross” and some character movement from the foreground to the background. It was a lot of fun making these and people seemed to enjoy them.
I also had a go at another Doctor Who lip sync, one quite relevant to today’s times unfortunately. The speech is taken directly from “The Zygon Inversion”, and you can find it on Youtube in it’s entirety as “The Doctor’s Anti-War Speech”. I was inspired to have ago at this after seeing Toniko Pantoja discuss the idea of “heavy referencing”, where you look at an actor’s performance and try to recreate it in animation without rotoscoping. I followed this process for 2 seconds, before taking some creative liberties in the rest of the animation whilst trying to capture Peter Capaldi’s wonderful performance.
Last, and certainly not least, my 2022 showreel now including some of my favourite bits of animation from the course so far, some classic projects pre-MA and some new and updated clips from ideas I never got round to and some bits of animation I wanted cleaning up (such as my CSM outro). I taught myself to composite with Premiere over the holidays and you can see it all over my work. All-in-all, my best showreel to date (which I’ve sent off to studios like The Line Animation and Golden Wolf in the hope of scoring an internship).
